I registered for this race 2 weeks ago just because. My leg isn't hurting anymore and yes, I've only been back running for about 2.5 weeks. But I just wanted to use this to gauge my personal fitness. I didn't go into it this morning thinking I could run something spectacular. I'm not dumb, I know I am not really in race shape.

There were a couple very fit looking Women there. I knew a few would definitely come in before me. And they did. I tried to run smart and not push the pace until the last 1.5 and this seemed to work because I passed about 3 women in the final mile as well as a few men.  I can't get my splits off my garmin right now. I think I need to do a dump on it. I couldn't even find the workout afterwards. I know my last mile was a 6:12. The other 2,  I played safe.

Something interesting I wanted to note. I know there are some who thinks it's dumb to pray over running or racing. But I do it all the time. I pray almost every morning as I am training, so why not pray before a race? Well I did. I just wanted my body to be protected from injury. And I asked God to help me race to what I was capable of doing right now. Interestingly enough, I heard a little voice come into my head that said don't expect to do today what you have done in the past. You're body isn't ready. And you will run what YOU are capable of today.

From the results of my time, I did run what my body was capable of doing today.  I stopped running the last week of April and only ran a handful of times during that break. And of course have only been back running most days for 2.5 weeks. I also just got back from 5 days on a Lake Powell beach unable to run. So it all made sense. And I am okay with that.

I think God knows he can't mess around with me and not answer my prayers anymore. I seem to get my answers or thoughts of wisdom within seconds after uttering them.

I just read Alberto Salazar's recently released book called "14 minutes". He said something that came back to my mind this morning. He said history shows you race the way you train. And this is SO TRUE. I haven't been able to train the way I usually do. I started doing tabata sprints to help with my turnovers and I believe it has done something. But, I have only trained at subpar paces these last few weeks. So yeah, we do race the way we are able to train. And now that my leg isn't hurting, I am feeling better about immersing myself in longer and slightly faster intervals (on the road). And I am excited about upping my mileage ever so slowly these next 5-6 weeks.

btw- I still love running :)

Ran 2 mile cool down with Melody. She is the cutest

nice job getting it done. 5k's aren't easy, especially when you know you're not up to your best fitness wise. still worth the effort and like you said a good gauge of where you're at. (your current fitness level, btw, with no training is about my fastest 5k!)

i don't think it's dumb to pray over running or racing. i'm praying pretty much over every thing 24/7.

JD I am always praying.... like all the time. Maybe I am afraid of being struck down lol :)

You're comment made me smile. Thanks much for your encouragement.

Congrats on a very smartly run race. Your prayer is the exact type of prayer we should all do. It wasn't for a specific time or a specific place but to just run what you are capable of running.

I thought JD was an atheist.

Anyway, great job Lily! I'm so glad you were able to run.

You should have seen Melody when she was pregnant. Kew-oot!

The fact that you threw down a 6:12 last mile proves that you have not lost any speed. Great work Lily!! You are going to be tearing it up the rest of the Summer, I just know it!

Lily, nice job. Have you given any though to hammering out your speedwork on the treadmill with a steeper incline? You'd get the cardio benefit, but not beat yourself up as much. I know it feels awesome to look down at the garmin and see mile splits in the low sixes and dipping into the 5's, but with your injury struggles, it might be wise to play it safe, and make your speed work based on effort instead of seconds. Just my 2 cents.

Also, I never know what to pray about. I guess you can't go wrong if it's unselfish.

Kam thank you so much for that suggestion. I know all about that type of 'speed work". Funny that I never implement it for myself. Maybe I will try that on Thursday.

Also, about the praying. Pray about anything. I feel better because it's a one on one conversation. It's like having a convo. Makes me feel better I guess.

Nice job Lily. You are totally right - racing is a product of training, so you can't expect a PR when things haven't been going perfectly. BUT, w/ the injuries you've had, just getting out there and toeing the line is a big jump forward and you're on the upswing so keep it rolling!
