The race here in Spanish Fork is quite a doozy. It brings in a decent amount of people. It hovers around 600 people. I love it because it's kind of my home town. I graduated from high school here, and lived here for 2 years after I graduated. Then built a home here in 2006 with my husband.

People have been asking me if I was ready for this today. The answer was confusing to me.

Yes but no.

I feel REALLY behind in my training this year. Hurting my calf took a lot of my fitness. It's a fair assessment.  It's not an excuse. I could tell from the the moment I jumped back on the road in middle june that I lost a lot of running fitness. Oh well. But today, I was actually feeling good. I threw down some 6:30's and a couple of 6:50's  before something happened. In the last mile I started getting VERY dizzy and felt a lot of confusion in my mind.  Then I got VERY nauseated. Not the normal semi nausea I have had in the past during the shorter distance races. But this was abrupt and felt really severe. The last mile I stopped 2 times because I was sure I was going to vomit, and sure I was going to lose consciousness. The last mile of this race today was the worst I have EVER felt in a road race. It even tops St. George. Yeah, it was that bad.

I don't know how I made it to the finish. I can't remember even finishing. I know I fought passing out as I swayed and stumbled through the lines at the finish shoot. It just so happened that my personal Doctor was there, and immediately grabbed my arm and took me to the tent to lay down. I honestly almost passed out. It took a good 20 minutes to get back to a semi normal state of mind.  My husband had to help me walk. I was a MESS. My blood pressure was very low. The nurses monitored that for awhile.

After talking to the Dr. he asked if I have changed my diet recently. A light bulb went on. DING! Yes, I started eating ultra clean about 9 days ago. Eating clean is hard. There is hardly any sodium in my diet. I also started drinking a gallon of water a day -which waters down your electrolytes.

So todays problem: electrolyte imbalance. Ayyy! Someday I'll get this right......

(Side note: I really feel like I would have been sub 42 today had this not happened. I really do. I was on my way there. I paced next to Shari Hales nearly the whole time until the last mile. She did a 41:38)

Wanted to post this because it described me to the T this morning:

Symptoms of mild hyponatremia (low sodium) include:

It was nice to meet you today, and speak with you and Lynz after. I had no idea you struggled, kudos to you for toughing it out. You didn't even mention the cash you won ;)!

Ahh yes, I won some cash. So did you! :)

It was so humid out there this morning and I felt like crap on my run as well. I can't even imagine trying to push the pace in that sheet. Glad you're ok and congrats on finishing top 5 in your AG.

Scary. This nerd is glad you're ok.

OH NO, you have both of them??? Crazy! I am sorry that you felt so cruddy at the end, dang it! But look how well you did with that competition out there!! That little race brings in some seriously speedy people and it is not an easy course at all!

before i read your drs diagnosis I knew what you had--- the humidity compounded it. I felt terribly nauseated on my 10k last saturday, and dizzy--- I was sweating too much and no electrolytes. I can totally relate. Sorry you had to deal with it. This heat is bugging a lot of people. No more clean diets and running you hear!!

So scary, Lily! I hope you're feeling better.

Otherwise has the new diet felt good?

I am so sorry that you got so sick during the race, that really stinks! You did awesome especially considering the situation. Thanks so much for chatting with me before the race, it helped calm my nerves a ton:)

I had the exact same thing happen at Speedgoat two years ago so I can relate... No fun! You still did extremely well considering. Congrats on toughing it out in the heat.

So sorry Lily! I can totally relate as I have had this happen twice. The first time I had to get an IV and still did not learn my lesson and let it happen again. Not fun at all! Great race all things considered.

Wow, I'm glad you're OK! You did great even with the whole electrolyte thing, that is scary. That's lucky your doctor was right there. Great race!

I'm so glad your doc was there to help and to guide you to the right conclusion. Despite the horrible feelings that last mile you still made it to the finish in an incredible time!! Awesome work Lily!

Kinda scary - glad you are OK. Still a very good run considering how you were feeling!

Glad you're ok, Lily. Hyponatremia is scary. I suffered from that the night/morning before St. George in 2010. It was so bad that I ended up in the hospital and missed the race.
